I meet many people in my travels, and when I tell them I’m from Las Vegas, I can predict what they'll say next. They’ll start asking me whether Sin City is actually a good place to live in, considering the gambling, casinos, and exotic nightlife. They ask about the cost of living in Las Vegas, which they imagine to be extremely high. People who have never been here or have never taken the time to read about this city are surprised to hear that you can raise kids in Las Vegas. And you never have to go to the Strip unless you want to or work there. Vegas is extensive, with many places to live and raise a family. With this in mind, I’ve compiled a list of 10 popular neighborhoods where you can live (or not), depending on what you’re looking for.

#1. The Strip

Location: S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109, USA The Strip is for the stereotypical Las Vegas experience. It’s the epicenter of Sin City, and it sparkles with neon lights. It’s home to the most iconic casinos. There are always rooms you can stay in, depending on your budget. There’s non-stop entertainment, with concerts, endless comedy gigs, magic shows, circus spectaculars, and nightclubs.

#2. Downtown Las Vegas

Downtown Las Vegas is full of old-school vibes, and many weddings take place here. It’s the former gambling and drinking scene with a kind of old-time charm that could excite you. There are 100-year-old hotels, vintage luxury high rises and houses, and many cool bars and casinos.

#3. Boulder City

Location: Boulder City, NV 89005, USA Boulder City lies 5 miles east of the Strip, though when you come here, you’ll think that you’re worlds away from the bright lights and the hustle and bustle that characterizes the center of Vegas. There aren’t any seedy strip joints or lavish casinos. It’s a quaint country town primarily built to serve Hoover Dam. It has lush parklands.

#4. Arts District

Location: 107E Charlestown Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89104, USA Known as the “hipster haven of Las Vegas,” Arts District lies at the southern edge of Downtown Las Vegas, 4.5 miles north of the Strip. It’s home to chic boutiques and galleries and is primarily characterized by a bohemian vibe.

Location: Henderson, NV 89052, USA This is a beautiful residential area that's highly safe. It lies in the east of the metropolitan area. It’s upscale for residents, but tourists can find cheaper hotels here.

#6. Lake Las Vegas

Location: Lake Las Vegas, Henderson, NV 89011, USA Lake Las Vegas is a beautiful lakeside community characterized by a magnificent reservoir. It’s where you bring your kids to have fun in Sin City. And it’s just 30 minutes from the Strip. You can sail, swim, fish, kayak, and water-ski here.

Location: Mt Charleston, NV 89124, USA This charming alpine village is only an hour’s drive from the Strip. Although it only has a few hundred residents, it boasts a peaceful escape for anyone, especially if you’re an outdoor enthusiast.

#8. Summerlin

Location: 1650 S Pavilion Center Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89135, USA This suburban neighborhood is only a stone’s throw from Red Rock Canyon. It's very clean, organized, and attractive. You might have trouble finding an expensive home or hotel room here, but you also won't experience as much of the crime that plagues other areas.

#9. Las Vegas Chinatown

Location: Spring Mountain Rd 201, Las Vegas, NV 89102, USA This is a spring of Asian delights. Located only 10 minutes west of the Strip, Las Vegas Chinatown is close to the biggest casinos and mouth-watering restaurants. There's a lot of Asian food, of course, but Chinatown has expanded to include almost every type of cuisine.

#10. North Las Vegas

Location: North Las Vegas, NV 89032, USA Stunning, arid landscapes characterize North Las Vegas. It offers a few museums and desert vistas that could be your cup of tea. It’s budget-oriented but still developing. It gives families a place away from the craziness that characterizes the Strip.
