'DiscoShow' - Xanadu Is Here!

Spiegelworld's 360 degree production is the dance party time of your life...

A place where nobody dared to goThe love that we came to knowThey call it Xanadu

And now, open your eyes and seeWhat we have made is realWe are in Xanadu

It seems like we've been waiting forever for this moment. Spiegelworld's DiscoShow is finally here. It's been promised for several years, and in the planning/execution stages for the better part of a decade. Spiegelworld empressario Ross Mollison had a dream. Now, open your eyes and see. The dream that came through a million yearsThat lived on through all the tearsIt came to Xanadu

I should say right off the bat that, despite its name, DiscoShow isn't really a traditional "show". It is a production with characters, choreography, a set, and a threadbare storyline. But think of DiscoShow as an actual disco dance party. The closest thing to a time machine, and what they have made is real. A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting starAn everlasting world and you're here with me, eternally

The premise of DiscoShow is a New York City evening of the seventies, and you're heading to the dance club. You board a subway at 99 PRINCE and disembark at The Glitterloft, an exciting precursor to the production itself. VEGAS 411 gave you an early peek at The Glitterloft here. The video above gives you a better glimpse at the club. Similar to ABSINTHE's "Green Fairy Garden", there's no cover charge or ticket required to visit The Glitterloft. You can drink, dance, play an authentic ASTEROIDS game for free, or relax and listen to music supplied by vinyl-loving deejays. Diner Ross (reviewed here) is off to one side if you're yearning for a bite. Twice a night, a towering drag queen who goes by the name of "Mother" beckons ticketholders to come forward. Bathed in lights and adorned in mylar, the DiscoShow hostess leads her "children" backwards in time to a world of roller skates, mirror balls, poppers, and short shorts. The doors to the 1970's are parted, and the realities of today instantly disappear. For the next seventy minutes, you'll be surrounded by fellow partiers and a collection of new Spiegelworld characters. Some are easier to spot than others, and a few have surprises in store.

The real Ake Blomqvist

Along with "Mother", you'll be introduced to "Ake Blomqvist", a Finnish dance instructor with moves as distinctive as his accent. Ake is Spiegelworld's take on the "King of Disco", who passed in 2013. You might remember Deney Terrio or JoJo Smith, competing infomercial personalities who took credit for Travolta's SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER performance. But Ake is WAY more fun. Once Ake has you moving and grooving, you'll encounter "Afrodite", "Adonis", "Athena", "Sheila", "Ted", and the heartbroken "Tina". Blue-collar workers and everyday people eager to find their dreams on the dance floor. Inhibitions will be shed, romance will be discovered, and they'll eventually witness the downfall of the disco era. But as DiscoShow proves, the music of the seventies never truly died....it was just rebranded. And now that disco is recognized as an important cultural movement, you can relive it in all its decadent glory. DiscoShow won't be for everyone, especially those who dislike dancing. Guests unable to stand for extended periods will have problems, as the concept doesn't provide seating. Fans expecting Spiegelworld's usual acrobatics might feel let down, too. Remember. this is a dance party, not a play.
Xanadu, Xanadu(Now we are here) in Xanadu
Ross Mollison's daring troupe should be applauded for thinking outside of the tent. DiscoShow is the most fully realized Las Vegas concept since AREA 15. It's a return to the glory days of joyful music, wild outfits, and endless possibilities. So dust off your shimmery shirts and head for DiscoShow. It's a surefire hit.
