The ORLEANS and SOUTH POINT Double Down on Shows

Two off-Strip casinos fill the void left by the “Great Entertainment Massacre of 2021”

It was a shock felt around the world when, in May of 2021, Caesars Entertainment decided to make a mockery of its own name by nearly wiping out its entertainment roster. In one fell swoop, the corporate operators of nine Vegas casinos decided to shutter over a dozen “smaller” shows, including The Bronx Wanderers, Mac King, Tenors of Rock, Crazy Girls, and Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man.   Also on the chopping block were longtime show venues like Cleopatra’s Barge, Anthony Cools Showroom, and the custom-made theater for Chippendales. Some have rebounded, others are gone forever, and the constant shuffling has kept us busy with V411 articles like this and this.   The permanent closure and eventual teardown of Mosaic Theater drove even more productions off the Strip. V Theaters and Saxe Theater at Miracle Mile Shops continue to operate, but not without some hiccups. Headline acts are now the big ticket, leaving smaller shows to find a new home away from Las Vegas Boulevard.  Fremont Street’s NOTORIETY LIVE and MODERN SHOWROOMS at Alexis Park Resort (across from Virgin Hotel) have made noteworthy strides in luring entertainers to their respective theaters. Together they account for nearly twenty ongoing residencies.  The latest, DISCO DIVAS, opens at Alexis Park on June 30th. Now South Point and The Orleans casino hotels are doubling down on their entertainment offerings. Already recognized for their large casinos, popular arenas, and bountiful dining options, these value-packed off-Strip resorts are just a short Uber or taxi ride away.  SOUTH POINT Hotel, Casino, and Spa -   Located at 9777 S Las Vegas Boulevard, South Point Casino resembles a massive golden castle or cathedral. Boasting over 2,100 hotel rooms, South Point is owned and operated by the legendary Michael Gaughan. Known for helping to found Coast Casinos, Gaughan built Barbary Coast Hotel, which now operates as The Cromwell.   Gaughan was also instrumental in bringing the world-famous National Finals Rodeo to Las Vegas. The event attracts thousands to South Point’s Equestrian Center. Thanks to the annual NFR, the entire city transforms into a sea of cowboy hats and country music concerts each December.  Nearly everything you love (and may miss) about the Las Vegas Strip can be found at South Point, including a value-priced buffet, plentiful cocktail servers on the casino floor, a massive bowling center, and a state-of-the-art Cinemark movie theater. The beautifully appointed South Point Showroom has become the latest home for beloved acts like The Righteous Brothers, Human Nature, and The Bronx Wanderers. Iconic names like Sheena Easton and Franki Valley stop there as well   The recent addition of ticketed performances at the resort’s Grandview Lounge adds to South Point’s entertainment portfolio. There are also numerous free shows throughout the casino. Part of the Boyd Casinos chain, Orleans provides over 1,800 hotel rooms, the 9,000-seat Orleans Arena, a 52-lane bowling complex, nearly a dozen dining outlets, and another Cinemark movie theater. Until recently, it was home to the annual Mr. Olympia competition.  Orleans Showroom seats 850 patrons and has hosted numerous big-name acts like Bill Maher, KISS, Gladys Knight, The Doobie Brothers, and Vegas-born Panic! At the Disco. Upcoming headliners include Air Supply.  A number of Strip shows have found their way to the Orleans Showroom, with a few new productions sprinkled in. Mosaic Theater operators Dean Coleman and Sophia Song were left high and dry when their historic venue had to shutter last fall (it has since been demolished). They’ve landed at Orleans Showroom with a handful of productions, some familiar and at least once brand new.  QUEENS OF ROCK -  After a multi-night trial run in March. Elyzabeth Diaga’s superlative QUEENS OF ROCK returns for one week. Performance dates are June 12-19, and tickets start at $52.95, available HERE. Diaga is excited to include Las Vegas as part of a summer tour:  “It has been a blessing for us to be able to match our tour dates with the availability of the Orleans Showroom, I just fell in love with that huge stage.”  LOVEU2 -  Don’t be surprised if producer Gilles Beaulieu finds a way to bring Queens of Rock back to Sin City for another run in the fall. In the meantime, he’s introducing the U2 tribute show LOVEU2 for three performances beginning June 21. Get tickets HERE.   Beaulieu tells VEGAS 411 that the cast of LOVEU2 is stunning in every way and they’ll have you firmly believing that they’re the real thing:  They will be performing all of the major hits that made U2 popular through the years, taken from their complete song list, with titles from two undisputed musical masterpieces: The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, without forgetting hits such as Sunday Bloody Sunday, Beautiful Day, Pride (In the Name of Love), Vertigo, Where the Streets Have No Name and many more.”  MJ The Evolution -  [embed]https://vimeo.com/832398838[/embed] SPR Production’s pet project is MJ The Evolution. The only faithful Michael Jackson tribute show to be fully endorsed by the Jackson family. MJ The Evolution also survived the Mosaic Theater’s closing to land at Orleans Showroom in March. This time around it was even bigger and better, taking full advantage of the wider stage and noteworthy sound design.  Performances begin on June 12 and run through July 8th. Reserve seats HERE LEGENDS IN CONCERT: Legendary Divas    After a historic run on the Strip, Legends in Concert closed at the Tropicana Showroom on December 30th. Fans have been waiting ever since for the announcement of a permanent new home. In the meantime, Legends will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with eleven performances at Orleans Showroom.   Host Frank Marino and the “Legendary Divas” version of the production plays June 26th through July 8th at Orleans Showroom. The show has mild adult humor but is suitable for all ages. Tickets start at $59.95 and are available HERE. SPECIAL $40 TICKET AVAILABLE USING CODE: LIC40 In Part Two, we'll look at THE VENUE, a relatively new performance space at Orleans Casino.
