'URBAN DEATH VEGAS' - Hitchcock By Way of Charles Addams

'URBAN DEATH VEGAS' - Hitchcock By Way of Charles Addams

Guest columnist Daavid Hawkins revisits VEGAS THEATRE COMPANY for its latest journey into darkness...

Daavid Hawkins can handle a few shocks. Are you ready?

Exactly one year ago, entertainer Daavid Hawkins published his first guest column at VEGAS 411. His review of Vegas Theatre Company's ABANDON became a top draw among our readers, and the show itself was a smash. ABANDON was presented by Las Vegas Horror Show (Jana Wimer and Bob Bullwinkel). This Halloween, the duo is back with URBAN DEATH VEGAS....and Hawkins returns to share his impressions of their shock-fest. Enjoy! Photos by Pete Foley Intriguing. Provocative. Mesmerizing. Hitchcock by way of Charles Addams. Vegas Theatre Company brings another spooky-season stunner to the stage. Urban Death Vegas is a tight one-hour presentation packed with social and political commentary, all of which are timely and timeless statements, yet devoid of a single spoken word. This bauble will have you all up in your feels without any blah blah blah.
The cast of actors works in seamless conjunction to fill your experience with equal measures of shock, laughter, and stunned silence. Pacing and timing of the show proceed at such a glorious clip that the audience seemed to find itself unable to applaud each spot without intruding on the next eagerly anticipated treat.
From the very start, delicious sound and light design drop you into each vignette before quickly ripping you away to sling you into yet another during this whirligig of terror mixed with laughter. Clever use of the intimate space had my head on a swivel, wondering where to look next while urging me to look everywhere at once.
The absolute precision of the piece, as well as some clever lighting techniques, requires all light sources in the audience to be put away. If anything in the show is too intense for you, don't worry. It will be replaced in a heartbeat by another spectacle to shock the person next to you. One man's cilantro is another man's soap.
Every cast member is extraordinary, bizarre, captivating, fearless, powerful, upsetting, and macabre in equal measure. The thrilling fluidity with which they each transform from wretched assailant to unfortunate sufferer makes one forget that there are only eight performers on stage instead of an endless conveyor belt of fodder being fed into the terror mill.
Don't walk. Run to see this chilling delight.
